Boring Sci Fi Remakes
Sometimes Hollywood is so fracking stupid. There are so many great science fiction and fantasy novels written in the last 50+ years, yet Hollywood continues to do remakes. News has been coming out that Paramount Pictures plans make another version of Dune and I keeping asking myself “Why?” The first Dune film, directed by David Lynch truly sucked…SUCKED! Sci Fi Channel came along several years later and made a two-part mini-series, and while it was not perfect it was still one hell of a good film and I think the best that we could get. Now Paramount wants to do another remake? Again, why? After two versions of this property, plus Sci Fi’s less successful Children of Dune mini-series, will there be an audience for it? I’m sure fans of the Dune novels, and there are many of them, will be interested in seeing the film, but unless Peter Berg can find some way to bring this huge novel to the screen without losing what make it great then it might be successful, but I still don’t think it will be much of a success. I certainly won’t be paying to see it in the theater.
If Hollywood wants to bring some good science fiction and fantasy to the silver screen why not Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s trilogy detailing the Buterlian Jihad? How about Robert Jordon’s Wheel of Time series, or how about anything by Arthur C. Clarke? Isaac Asimov’s Foundation novels? The Dresden Files done right (unlike Sci Fi Channel’s disaster of a series) would make great films. I’ve often thought David Weber’s Honor Harrington novels (at the first three or four novels) would make kick-ass films as would Kevin J. Anderson’s Saga of the Seven Suns novels. I could go on, but you get the picture.
